Designing for Heritage
Phased redevelopment and refurbishment of an existing department store in the heart of a sensitive archaeological and conservation area, carefully balancing the requirement to create a dramatic new presence for the store in the town centre with respect and sensitivity to its location.
The development has increased the trading area by 70% and has improved access to, and movement and mobility within the store.
The main façade is divided into a series of portals which approximate the burgage plot width of its immediate neighbours and attenuate the relationship in scale between the High Street and the store. Historically sensitive Tudor and Victorian buildings in the middle of the elevation have been carefully restored.
The development was a complex, logistical exercise that maintained maximum trading area throughout construction and was completed in September 2016.
