Design for Sustainability
South Cambridgeshire District Council’s Headquarters building is set in landscaped surroundings, part of the Cambourne Business Park. With a clearly defined brief which necessitated a demanding design and construction programme and contractually-binding internal climate conditions, our design proposed a ‘low energy’ sustainable strategy with an open internal environment to encourage communication and a welcoming environment for visitors and public users of the building alike.
The building has naturally-ventilated, open plan offices on 15m deep floorplates, each side of an open 'street' that acts as a stack to enhance the ventilation, and limited cellular space located at the ends of each floorplate.
Its mixed mode sustainable design means that most of the year the office is vented and cooled passively through the facade using the stack effect of the open street design. The exposed precast concrete soffits giving thermal mass to aid cooling using night-time air.
One of the facades is protected from solar gain using mechanical solar louvres that automatically follow the path of the sun, reflecting in as much light as possible without overheating the occupants and while allowing extensive views over the beautifully landscaped surround. The building was awarded an Excellent BREEAM rating.
