We are made up of a talented collective team whose lives, families and passions are immensely important to us. We value and nurture their wellbeing, skills and passions to create the best designs for all our projects.

As a knowledge intensive design studio, our people benefit from a natural and generous flow of ideas, evaluations and information, enabled through the open studio, more recently via digital media and frequently through spontaneous and serendipitous chatting both in person and virtually.

We provide wellbeing support and encouragement through our directors and our HR team, led by Yvonne Mathurin. This is in the form of healthcare for all and socials for fun amongst many personally attentive channels for dialogue and understanding.

Cardine Hollowell

BA(Hons) Interior Architecture: Design and Practice Senior Associate - Interiors

Cardine has over 18 years experience of working on commercial workplace environments ranging from 2,000sqft to 430,000sqft. She works for a variety of clients from finance and corporate to technology and charities delivering high quality commercial fitout space. More recently, her work has focused on Cat A+ fitted space working directly for the landlord before tenant involvement, which is becoming an increasingly frequent need in the market.

Cardine is an accomplished designer with expertise spanning concept through to delivery. Her client-focused approach, attention to detail and strong design leadership consistently result in thoughtful, efficient and beautifully executed spaces that deliver meaningful transformation for clients.

Her approach to space planning is both logical and practical, with the main goal to create the most operationally efficient workplace for the client and to truly enhance the office experience for staff. She prides herself on being able to explain design concepts and layout considerations to clients whose usual day job is not within property and to advise on any constraints of their chosen space and building regulation requirements. Her experience and knowledge of both technical requirements and current design trends allow her to select suitable materials, furniture and feature design elements that work within budget and programme needs to support the smooth running of each project and cater to each client’s unique needs.

Nick Viner

BA(Hons) DipArch RIBA Director - Head of Interiors

Nick is a Director of the UK Practice and is Head of Interiors.

He has 25 years of experience in the design and delivery of interiors projects within the key London and South East UK markets as well as across Europe. His portfolio includes major commercial workplace fitout and refurbishment projects for a myriad of clients including landlords and developers, blue-chip end user occupiers and charity organisations. There is also diversity in Nick’s work, with interiors project experience also including retail environments, high-end private members clubs and one-off residences.

Nick has an excellent working relationship with his client base, a number of which have supported him throughout his career. He has built-up long lasting client relationships by leading project teams across complex and fast-track schemes and delivering each project with the same passion and attention to deal.

Nick works as part of a dedicated interiors team that tempers creative flair with technical excellence. Through their work the group looks to add value to critical real estate assets as well as exceeding expectations. All interiors team members share the same passion of designing high-quality interior spaces that are both buildable and sustainable whilst enhancing the experience of those occupying them.

The interiors team, under Nick’s leadership, aspire to be good to work with and work well as integral members of interiors project teams. They are all keen to push themselves and expand their technical knowledge, none more so than Nick who now includes Principal Designer expertise under the new Building Safety Act, following the successful delivery of interiors projects within buildings defined by the Act as being of a Higher Risk.

George King-Clarke

George is passionate about sustainability and has dedicated many years to research on the subject. He now works to integrate sustainable design into projects across the practice and is part of the practice sustainability team to continually develop our practice knowledge and design approach.

He uses his experience and knowledge to work across multiple sectors along with an analytical and creative approach to develop innovative design solutions to complex projects.

His interests in technology and BIM enable him to envision advanced designs efficiently and to a practical construction standard.

Valentine Lezius

BArch(Hons) MArch PgDipArch ARB RIBA Associate

Val joined Aukett Swanke as a Part 1 student and has rapidly grown to become an accomplished project architect who is passionate and engaging to work with.

She has worked across various building types from concept to completion, spanning new build and refurbishment across the life sciences, office and hotel sectors.

Most recently Val has led a GMP facility through all work stages for an end user client in the life sciences sector.

Joe Copley

BArch(Hons) MArch PGDipArch ARB RIBA Associate

Joe joined Aukett Swanke in 2018 and has developed his career with the studio working on a variety of projects, including a planning consent for a major mixed use masterplan, a series of life sciences feasibility studies and working on some of our most prestigious office projects.

He is a passionate and engaging architect and has recently delivered a central London office refurb across all work stages, demonstrating his ability to navigate complex planning and site constraints by collaborating with clients, planners and contractors to find the best design solutions.

Joe is always seeking to drive forward the learning and development of the studio organising talks and seminars of the latest sustainable innovations. Outside the studio, Joe is a keen golfer and avid Arsenal fan.

Anirudh Sood

BA(Hons) MArch ARB Head of Digital

Anirudh Sood, Aukett Swanke’s BIM and Digital Strategies Lead, drives innovation and excellence in the practice. As a qualified architect, he takes a pivotal role in advancing BIM methodologies, leading the in-house BIM Forum to create advanced solutions for project teams.

Anirudh ensures quality by implementing a strong QA system. Aukett Swanke’s expertise in delivering BIM Models for Facilities Management aligns with his commitment to excellence.

Sustainability and innovation are a key focus, with Anirudh collaborating closely with clients and consultants to define project BIM requirements, ensuring a collaborative BIM process. His leadership extends beyond Aukett Swanke, contributing to the Digital Design Leadership Group, pushing the industry into the digital age.

In summary, Anirudh Sood’s role exemplifies Aukett Swanke’s commitment to cutting-edge BIM methodologies and digital strategies, ensuring ongoing innovation and high standards in the design process.

Andrew Henning Jones

DiplArch RIBA Director - Aukett + Heese Berlin

Andrew is Director of the Berlin studio, which was opened in 1992. He studied Architecture at Kingston in the UK and is a Member of the RIBA and the Berlin Chamber of Architects.

He joined the office at its launch, having previously worked in North America, in London, and a period lecturing in Urban Design at Stuttgart University, Germany.

Andrew is responsible for the Aukett + Heese GmbH studio as well as all projects and construction projects, especially for design. Andrew’s expertise includes the design and delivery of architecture and interior design projects for commercial office buildings, the retail sector, hotels, schools and for industrial buildings.

Bulent Dundar

MArch Turkish Chamber of Architects Director - Aukett Swanke Mimarlik Istanbul

Bulent is a long standing member of our Istanbul studio. He is a highly experienced Director and Team Leader with extensive experience in the organisation and technical delivery of projects including commercial offices and residential developments. Bulent leads the quality and technical standards for projects commissioned with Aukett Swanke Mimarlik, ensuring consistency of service across the business. He manages project collaborations with our other international studios.

Bulent has excellent IT skills and extensive experience in planning the project process including the co-ordination of input from other consultants and specialists in the wider client teams. His more recent experience has involved the design of a series of landmark office buildings in Istanbul, delivering Grade A commercial space to the Istanbul tenant market. His experience includes all stages from conceptual design to construction documentation, and Bulent has supported a number of projects to site completion.

Burcu Senparlak

MArch General Manager – Aukett Swanke Mimarlik Istanbul

Burcu joined the practice in 2008 and, as General Manager, she is responsible for the management of our Istanbul studio.

On projects she plays a leading role. She has considerable experience in design management and the creative design and delivery of end-user workplace interior design and fitout. Many of her clients are from the expanding TMT sector where effective workplace design is an integral part of brand expression.

On architectural projects Burcu works in partnership with our London studio and provides project leadership, design direction and delivery solutions to ensure that our clients’ design aspirations, delivery schedule and budgetary requirements are achieved.

Clare Turner

Associate - Head of Business Development

Clare joined the practice in 2005. In her role as Head of Business Development, Clare attends industry networking events, meets with potential clients and consultants, and is responsible for sourcing new business opportunities for the practice.

Clare also organises a lot of round table events and launched a Parents in Real Estate network which meets every six months. Clare is a founder of Young Entrepreneurs in Property (YEP).

Daniel Winters

BSc BArch Senior Associate

Daniel has more than 17 years’ experience as a Project Architect within the practice. He is a strong, calm project leader with excellent organisational and internal team management skills. He has a proven track record in the City of London and Westminster on complex refurbishments and new build office projects.

As a Studio Principal, Daniel plays a key role in fostering high quality design, and monitoring and maintaining Project Quality Control within the studio.

David Smith

David brings extensive expertise in the design, coordination, and delivery of complex buildings across a variety of projects, including refurbishments and listed buildings. With a focus on technical design leadership and project management, he leads projects from early planning through to completion.

Experienced in managing design coordination on complex projects, David ensures alignment with the client brief and oversees the broader design team. He collaborates proactively with multidisciplinary teams and end-users to facilitate a smooth project execution. David is a firm believer in the value of pragmatic, well-considered design as a tool to solve complex challenges and add value.

As one of two Associate Directors overseeing the London studio, David focuses on technical oversight, studio operations, and commercial matters.

Edmund McCartney

Edmund has extensive experience in a wide range of sectors having delivered commercial, healthcare, education, residential, industrial and master plan projects.

He is a BIM expert with over 15 years’ experience and a champion of collaborative working methodologies, taking pains to carefully coordinate designs and facilitate the most effective construction and FM processes possible.

Edmund has a highly analytical and creative approach towards design with a real focus on developing conceptual ideas into fully resolved building designs ready for construction.

Luke Schuberth

BA(Hons) DipArch RIBA Managing Director

Luke is Managing Director of the UK practice.

He enjoys both masterplanning and architectural design, and is committed to design excellence and creating spaces that will foster innovation and enjoyment. His portfolio stretches from a Mayfair Auction gallery for Phillips and major London refurbishments to HQ office buildings, life sciences and mixed use schemes in cities across the UK.

He has been designing offices for 25 years and has a deep knowledge of trends and securing quality. He is passionate about developing high quality design solutions that start from the client’s brief and the context of the site, but look to stretch the latest thinking in how the building will be used for its people and its position in the environment.

He searches to find the regeneration of value, for the client and for the building user, whether this comes from through the creative reuse of existing buildings or new build design.

Marcus Dietzsch

Director – Aukett + Heese Frankfurt

Marcus has been Director of the Frankfurt studio since 2009. He is responsible for the design and implementation of all projects undertaken by the office in Germany and for his clients who have projects in other European countries.

He trained at the Universities of Karlsruhe (Baden) and Darmstadt (Hesse) and is Member of the Chamber of Architects in the State of Hesse.

Marcus has designed a number of award-winning projects and is experienced in designing buildings and the interiors for corporate offices, courts, cultural buildings, residential schemes and hotel buildings. Notably, he was responsible for developing the ‘Centre de Conférences’ in Luxembourg, which is used by the European Union.

Maurice Van Eijs

IrArch MArch Senior Associate

Maurice is a talented creative design architect with over 25 years’ experience in the UK and internationally. He is an adept and innovative problem solver who enjoys the challenges, analytical and creative processes of master planning and mixed-use design projects and his pragmatic approach ensures the delivery of strong design solutions. Having practiced in the Netherlands, France, the USA and the UK, Maurice has built up a vast international experience with projects in Europe, Asia and the Americas. Furthermore he has taught design studios at Princeton University, Philadelphia University and the University of Cambridge.

Over the last years, he has been on the forefront of designing and delivering mixed-use schemes – hybrids – specialising in the amalgamation of industrial and creative uses with residences, especially in the UK.

He plays a leadership role in our studio to constantly drive design excellence, mentor creative talent and to reinforce our studio ethos.

He is passionate about working collaboratively with clients, the team and external stakeholders to create highly considered sustainable designs that deliver the best solutions for clients and building users.

Simon Davies

Simon brings extensive experience in guiding projects from initial concept through to completion across a diverse range of sectors. His portfolio spans from complex, large-scale refurbishments to boutique retail spaces, highlighting his versatility and adaptability to every client brief.

A firm believer in the power of thoughtful design, Simon emphasizes its role in enhancing health, well-being, and fostering collaboration and social connections. This commitment is exemplified by his leadership on the recently completed STEAMhouse project, where he oversaw all stages.

As one of two Associate Directors overseeing the London studio, Simon is dedicated to pushing high design standards and nurturing a collaborative, knowledge-sharing environment.

Stephen Embley

Stephen is Managing Director of our Middle East operations. Based in Dubai he is a very experienced award-winning architect with expertise in the design and delivery of major new build, refurbishment and interior design projects.

He has wide range of experience with expertise in the design and delivery of award-winning international luxury and commercial hotels, leisure projects, mixed-use and retail, airport, and corporate office buildings.

Subraya Kalkura

Director – John R Harris & Partners

Subraya is an experienced all-round architect who has been core member of John R Harris & Partners since joining the practice in 2005.

With a passion for sustainable architecture he has contributed to several projects as sustainability advisor and has produced project specific green design solutions.

He has worked on a wide range of projects including corporate interiors, retail, residential, laboratories, education buildings and high-end private residences. His experience includes all stages of the projects including conceptual design, construction and technical documentation, authority approvals and Subraya has led several projects on site up to completion.

As a Director of the practice, Subraya has been actively involved in practice management, business development and monitoring of the licensing requirements with various local authorities.

Suzette Vela Burkett

BBE BArch(Hons) RIBA AMUSA Director

Suzette is a Director of the UK practice.

A highly creative and analytical architect, she has international experience on architectural and interior design projects in the office, retail, mixed use and hotels sectors, from fast track new builds to complex heritage buildings and ‘special projects’. Her particular interests include the challenges of refurbishment and working with complex buildings or sites in a sustainable and environmentally sensitive way, creating maximum value for clients.  A passion for clever detailing and materials use helps drive her project designs and the desire to ‘get things built’ propels Suzette and her teams through even the most challenging projects.

Suzette has a strong collaborative approach, from helping to align the right people to initiate a project, to leading the team to deliver it through to completion.  She strives for open, honest communication and actively building positive relationships with colleagues, consultants, contractors and clients that continue long beyond the life of a project. She has collaborated with many other international designers and enjoys the ‘whole building’ design experience:  architecture and its complex journey through to the final detail of interior design.

Developers, funders, end user clients and operators / tenants are all well represented across her 25 year portfolio of projects across the UK, Europe, UAE, Russia and Australia.  Her wider role in the studio includes looking after our people and overseeing the Legal and Risk Management aspects of the practice on the UK Board.

Tom Alexander

BA(Hons) DipAA ARB RIBA Affiliate

Tom is a highly innovative and collaborative architect and strategist, designing projects and creating new narratives across multiple sectors. His experience spans over 20 years with a clear focus on the wellbeing of people and an environmental responsibility.

He has designed market-changing masterplanning and architectural projects, pioneering and developing the blending of industrial buildings with living and working environments to create a richly mixed and co-located community we often call Hybrids.

Tom’s open minded but highly rigorous approach enables fresh thinking and viable ideas to be explored and pursued, often challenging the accepted norms but always offering new ways of improving the natural and built environment for people and the climate.

He is a regular keynote speaker, panellist and roundtable guest, and a design media commentator including for The Economist and Reuters.

Tom has a keen relationship with architectural education, including support and juror roles at Loughborough University, and as an invited juror previously at the Bartlett UCL.

He is an expert member of the New London Architecture (NLA) Tall Building’s panel, and also the Chair of their Industrial and Logistics Expert Panel. He is a founder and trustee of the Higher Education Design Quality Forum, HEDQF.

Umberto is a creative yet methodical designer with a broad range of project experience spanning different sectors, working from concept to completion.

He is an innovator, drawing from his experience in different sectors to deliver his clients buildings which are fresh and forward thinking.

He believes strongly communicating the architectural process clearly and concisely, so that his clients are able make considered and decisive decisions at each stage of the project.

He is a key part of the studio design group, overseeing design quality and constantly pushing the way in which we think about and execute our work.

Yvonne Mathurin

Associate - Head of HR

Yvonne is responsible for general HR strategy across the practice alongside wide-ranging employee engagement and wellbeing initiatives, as well as Health & Safety and Privacy policy.  As a key member of the supporting team she develops the HR approach in response to Aukett Swanke’s wider organisational needs.

Having worked in HR professional services for over 30 years Yvonne is CIPD qualified and has had experience in a variety of sectors including manufacturing, financial, retail and property development.

Zeynep Orbek

March Turkish Chamber of Architects Director - Aukett Swanke Mimarlik Istanbul

Zeynep is a long standing member of our Istanbul studio. She qualified and worked as a project architect / team leader in the USA where she gained extensive understanding of working internationally.

She is a highly experienced Director and Project Leader having delivered a number of projects to Construction Documents stage, and provided site support consultancy services to project completion.

She regularly works with our London and other international studios and her project experience includes various multi-scale projects involving high profile corporate interiors, building remodelling, retail stores, and financial services retail branches.
